At St Teresa's we believe learning a foreign language is a necessary part of being a member of a multi-cultural society and provides an opening to other cultures.
St Teresa's uses Language Angels to the teaching of French as our modern language. Language Angels provides a sequential and progressively planned French curriculum which builds on prior learning.
St Teresa's uses Language Angels scheme of work and resources to ensure we offer a relevant, broad, vibrant and ambitious French curriculum that will inspire and excite our pupils using a wide variety of topics and themes.
Intent
- To provide our pupils with a relevant, broad and progressive curriculum.
- To have high expectations so our pupils can achieve their full potential.
- To grow curious, confident and reflective language learners.
- To provide our pupils with the foundation which will equip them for further language studies.
- To teach 4 key language learning skills, listening, speaking, reading, writing and all necessary grammar.
- To teach our pupils how to look up and research language they are unsure of and use their bank of reference materials to help wit their spoken and written tasks.
Implement
- Key Stage 2 classes will have access to a very high-quality French language curriculum.
- Skills will be taught in progression and developed through regularly taught and well planned weekly French lessons.
- Our Pupils will acquire, use and apply a growing bank of vocabulary, language skills and grammatical knowledge through quality first teaching of French
- Teachers will know where every child is at any point in their French language journey.
- Lessons offering appropriate levels of challenge and stretch will be taught at all times to ensure pupils learn effectively, continuously building their knowledge of and enthusiasm for French.
- Year 3 will be taught from the the entry level units for pupils with little or no previous learning of a foreign language learning.
- Year 4 and year 5 will be taught the intermediate level where there is basic knowledge embedded.
- Year 6 will be taught progressive and creative units which are the most challenging and builds on the children's good understanding of the basics they are learning.
- Children will build on previous knowledge gradually as their foreign language lessons continue to recycle, revise and consolidate previously learnt language whilst building on all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Knowledge and awareness of required and appropriate grammar concepts will be taught throughout all units at all levels of challenge.

- Pupils learning and progression is assessed and children achieve age related expectations in a foreign language.
- Pupils will make good or better progress.
- Pupils to be confident at speaking French.
- Pupils will leave St Teresa's confident in their learning journey of learning a modern foreign language.
